Nearly 1,000 election-related complaints received thus far - EC

The complaints received by the Election Commission

of Sri Lanka related to the upcoming presidential election have further increased.

The Election Commission says nearly 1,000 complaints have been received so far, pertaining to the 2024 Presidential Election.

Accordingly, a total of 925 election complaints have been reported between July 31 and August 26, the commission said.

Out of these, 901 are related to election law violations, one act of violence and 23 other complaints.

However, the Election Commission emphasized that receiving nearly 1,000 complaints in less than a month is a very concerning situation.

Meanwhile, the election monitoring organizations say that there is a rise in complaints related to the misuse of state property in connection with the Presidential Election.

The People’s Action for Free and Fair Elections (PAFFREL) has reportedly received around 250 complaints related to the upcoming Presidential Election and its Executive Director, Rohana Hettiarachchi indicated that this number might continue to rise.
