Presidential Election: Over 24,000 postal voting applications rejected

The Commissioner General of Elections Saman Sri Ratnayake

has stated that 736,589 applications have been received for postal voting at the 2024 Presidential Election.

He further said that 24,268 postal vote applications have been rejected and that a total of 712,321 applicants are eligible for postal voting.

He also said that the delivery of ballot papers for postal voting will be carried out on August 26.

The Election commission has stated that the opportunity has been provided for the marking of postal votes for a period of three days in the first week of September.

Speaking in this regard, the Chairman of the Election Commission R.M.A.L. Rathnayake said: 

“The process of accepting postal voting applications has now been completed. The marking of postal votes has been prepared to be held in the next few days at the beginning of next month. On the 26th of this month, the respective postal ballots have been prepared to be issued to the relevant institutions.” 

“Postal voting for the Presidential Election will be held on September 04, 05 and 06. And September 04 is reserved for District Secretariats, Election Offices and Police for marking postal votes.”

Meanwhile, September 11 and 12 have been allocated as additional dates for those who were unable to mark their postal vote and necessary arrangements have been made for that, he added. 

The 2024 presidential election is set to be held on September 21, and total of 39 candidates have submitted their nominations.
